Hiedi Chan, MA, MFT, Art Therapist

The fundamental motivation that drives me to do therapy work is compassion, which God has instilled in my heart. Without compassion and empathy, therapists will not develop strong therapeutic alliance with their clients. Therapeutic alliance is one of the most important factors in effective therapy, as research studies have shown. With compassion and empathy as the foundation, coupled with sound theological and clinical training, I offer therapeutic support in many areas of life's struggles including: grief and loss, depression, anxiety, adjustment issues, acculturation issues, caregiver stress, domestic violence, and ineffective communication.

Art Therapy Specialization

I believe that effective therapy is an integration of science and art. I have extensive training in art therapy. Integrating art therapy into my counseling practice brings surprising and enlightening therapeutic results to my clients. This is consistent with clinical research indications that the use of art is a way to get at deeper feelings and greater self-knowledge, which is a valuable part of the healing process.

Art therapy integrates the fields of human development, visual art (drawing, painting, sculpting, and other art forms), and the creative process. Art therapy is used with children, adolescents, adults, older adults, groups, and families to assess and treat the following: anxiety, depression, and other emotional problems and psychological disorders; severe mental illness; substance abuse and other addictions; family and relationship issues; abuse and domestic violence; social and emotional difficulties related to disability and illness; trauma and loss; physical, cognitive, and neurological problems; and psychosocial difficulties related to medical illness.
